To walk around Villar d’Allen is to immerse in a romantic journey through natural landscape and history, where camellias tell a story. This English manor, located in the outskirts of Porto, opens its doors to everyone who wants to see – and even call their one – some of the finest existing camellias. Native from China, in Porto’s humid climate and soil the camellias gain exuberant dimensions that surprise even Chinese visitors. Each year, from November to March, camellias bloom in different phases according to the cultivars, the most common being the Camellia Japonica.
Passear pelos jardins de Villar d’ Allen é imergir numa viagem romântica através da paisagem e da história,ou melhor, de uma história feita de camélias. Esta mansão de estilo inglês, localizada na periferia do Porto, abre as suas portas a todos os queiram ver – e até mesmo comprar – uma das melhores colecções de camélias do país. Nativa da China, no clima e solo húmido do Porto as camélias ganham dimensões exuberantes que surpreendem até mesmo os visitantes do país do Sol nascente. Todos os anos, de Novembro a Março, as camélias florescem em diferentes fases, conforme os cultivares, sendo o mais comum o do tipo Camellia Japónica.
Of the 3.000 hybrids and cultivars of camellias in the entire world, 400 were created in Portugal. Even today, Villar d’Allen nursery still plays an important part in this story. I felt it the moment I arrived, walking through its fresh, shadowy paths colored by the camellia’s evergreen shrubs, flowers and buttons. At the doorstep, a charming couple awaited: Isaura Allen, who greeted me with sincere affection, and her husband, José Alberto Allen, whose complexion carries the traces of his English ancestors, as well as his elegant bearing. Together, they welcome me into their home and the journey through the history of the Allen family and gardens begins.
Dos cerca de 3.000 cultivares e híbridos de camélias em todo o mundo, 400 foram criados em Portugal. Ainda hoje, os viveiros Villar d’ Allen desempenham um papel importante nesta história. Eu senti-o no momento em que cheguei à quinta, pelos caminhos refrescados pelas sombras das árvores e coloridos pelos tons das japoneiras. Na porta, um casal encantador já me esperava: Isaura Allen, que me recebeu literalmente de braços abertos, e o seu marido José Alberto Allen, cuja compleição carrega os traços dos seus antepassados ingleses, assim como o seu porte elegante. Juntos, eles recebem-me em sua casa e a viagem através da história da família Allen e dos seus jardins começa.
It all started in the XVII century. The mansion you can see today was built in 1780 by a rich merchant and acquired 60 years later by João Allen (great great grandfather of my host), who added a wing to each side of the building so that it would resemble to an English manor. João Allen, a great art collector, started a great collection of camellias in his home. His son, the botanist Alfredo Allen, transformed the gardenesque planting design of his father into a romantic garden inspired in the wildness of nature and putting into practice his collectables spirit. That is the reason why, more than one and a half century later, you can see a giant sequoia from America, a pine tree from Japan or an araucaria from New Zealand – with an height of 50 meters – or a set of 6 rare jubaea palm trees from Chile.
Tudo começou no século XVII . A mansão da quinta foi construída em 1780 por um comerciante abastado e adquirida 60 anos mais tarde por João Allen (tetravô do meu anfitrião), que acrescentou uma ala de cada lado do edifício para que se assemelhasse a uma mansão inglesa. Talvez influenciado pela sua natureza de coleccionador de arte, João Allen dedicou-se ainda à criação de uma grande colecção de camélias nesta casa. O seu filho, o botânico Alfredo Allen, transformou o jardim de estilo gardenesque que herdou num jardim romântico, inspirado na natureza selvagem. É assim que se compreende que, mais de150 anos depois, existam em Villar d’Allen árvores de grande porte como uma sequóia gigante da América , um pinheiro do Japão ou uma araucária da Nova Zelândia – com uma altura de 50 metros – ou um conjunto de 6 raras palmeiras Jubaea do Chile.
It is in this romantic scenery that a notable variety of camellias grow. As a botanist, Alfredo Allen was in charge of Porto city’s councilman for the Gardens. His love for the camellias would lead the way to several generations of the Allen family that would continue to cultivate them and even determine the integration of the camellia into Porto’s identity. These days, it is up to his great grandson, José Alberto Allen, and his wife Laura to maintain the tradition. Amazingly, the two alone, helped only by one gardener, have been able not only to take care of the Allen romantic garden but also to nurse a rich variety of camellias an even to create and register new ones. It therefore came as no surprise that Villar d’Allen nursery was justly awarded with the Best Camellia in Portugal prize in the Porto’s municipality’s Camellias Exhibition last year.
É neste cenário romântico que uma notável variedade de camélias cresce. Como botânico, Alfredo Allen estava encarregado do pelouro dos jardins no município do Porto. A sua dedicação às camélias influenciou várias gerações da família Allen, que continuaram a cultivá-las, e seria determinante na integração da camélia na identidade do Porto. Hoje cabe ao seu bisneto , José Alberto Allen, e à sua esposa Laura manterem a tradição. Surpreendentemente, este casal, ajudado apenas por um jardineiro, tem sido capaz não só de cuidar do jardim romântico Allen, mas também de cultivar uma vasta variedade de camélias e mesmo de criar novas camélias. Não espanta, por isso, que os Viveiros Villar d’ Allen tenham sido galardoados, no ano passado, com o prémio para a melhor Camélia em Portugal na Exposição de Camélias do Porto organizada pela Câmara da cidade.
Isaura Allen smiles in delight as she holds a white baby camellia in her hand. Every single camellia has its own name and she cherishes them as if they were old friends. This garden, its flowers, trees and plants, have been her long time passion for her and it was due to her initiative, together with José Alberto Allen, that the property is now open to visitors. They come from all parts of the world and, in common, they have a deep interest for botany that meets the knowledge and eloquence of both Laura and José Alberto.
Isaura Allen sorri deliciada enquanto segura uma camélia branca de anã nas mãos. Cada camélia tem seu próprio nome e ela cuida delas como se fossem velhos amigos. Este jardim, as suas flores, árvores e plantas, têm sido uma paixão ao longo de quatro décadas e foi graças à sua iniciativa, juntamente com José Alberto Allen, que a propriedade está agora aberta aos visitantes. Vindos de todas as partes do mundo, têm em comum um profundo interesse pela botânica, que encontra a correspondência perfeita com o conhecimento e eloquência de Laura e José Alberto .
With an idyllic scenery and two wonderful hosts, only one thing could make the visit to Villar d’Allen nursery even more exclusive: a wineglass of the exclusive Villar d’Allen Port wine. It is made of a blend created by Alfredo Allen – that, as a young man, learned to know the different Port wine lots in the Real Vinícola company – and his son, resulting in a superb 20 year old Tawny Porto that is only sold in the property. Thus, with a tost, I bid farewell to you all!
Com um cenário idílico e dois maravilhosos anfitriões, preparo-me para a despedida quando, terminado o percurso, regressámos à entrada da casa. Mas os Allen oferecem-me um cálice de vinho do Porto muito especial, exclusivo: um Porto Villar d’Allen Tawny 20 anos. É feito de um lote criado pelo próprio Alfredo Allen – que em jovem aprendeu esta arte na empresa Real Vinícola – e pelo seu filho Tomás. Os enólogos têm-no elogiado como néctar distinto que é e assim, com um brinde, me despeço!
