Porto Medieval Wall, known as Fernandine Wall, was built to substitute the old late-medieval defensive wall that, by the 15th century, had become too small for the growing city. It was rebuilt by the king D. Fernando, after whom it was named, between 1368 and 1437 with money from the wine transfer tax and it was about 3000 paces long and 30 feet high. It was topped off by battlements and strengthened by bastions and towers.

Two stretches still exist today: the one portrayed in these pictures is called the Trecho dos Guindais.

A muralha Fernandina veio substituir a antiga cerca alto-medieval no século XIV, já que o desenvolvimento da cidade assim o exigia. Foi terminada no reinado de D. Fernando, de quem herdou o nome, entre 1368 e 1437, com verbas da Sisa do Vinho. Estendia-se ao longo de 2300 metros e tinha uma altura média de 9 metros. Além das características ameias, numerosas torres quadradas a guarneciam em toda a sua extensão. Desta antiga muralha persistem ainda dois trechos. O que aqui vos deixo retratado é o magnífico Trecho dos Guindais.

How to get there:

You can access it by taking the Funicular dos Guindais, near Luis I bridge in Porto’s riverside. Once on top, you just cross the street and descend to the Largo Primeiro de Dezembro, at your left. Pass through the Arch that accesses Santa Clara Church and the Wall will be at your left.

Como chegar:

Podem aceder à muralha subindo o Funicular dos Guindais, junto à Ponte Luis I, na ribeira do Porto. Após sair do Funicular, atravessem a rua e desçam um pouco. Virem à esquerda no Largo Primeiro de Dezembro e atravessem o arco que dá acesso à Igreja de Santa Clara. Logo à esquerda abre-se a Muralha Fernandina sobre o Porto para vos presentear com uma experiência de viagem no tempo e oportunidade fotográfica insuperáveis.
