Travelling from north to south of Portugal in one single day is a journey filled with different sensations, which I experienced during my first trip to the Algarve and relive every year. There are mainly three reasons why you must visit AlgarveA native from the northern province of Minho and with more liaisons to the north than the south of Portugal, the Algarve remained for a big part of my life an unknown destination. Living near the border with Spain, Galicia was a frequent destination for me and my family. Following Galicia, there were several trips I made through Spain, later exploring the south of France and, finally, Europe beyond the latin region. This goes to show you that I travelled across the old continent even before visiting the Algarve. When I finally got there, as an adult, I was overwhelmed by that part of Portugal that was so different from what I knew.

In a journey from the North to the South of Portugal along the coast you can see the landscape changing, from the green mountains of Minho and Douro regions to the rice paddies valleys in the basin of the Tejo river, where I’m always delighted to see the majestic nests of storks inhabiting the electricity poles along the road.
After crossing the Tejo I feel I have entered in the South part of the country. Herds of Ribatejo bulls and light coloured oxen – which are rare in the North – as well as occasional Pure Blood Lusitano horses, which are a native Portuguese breed. This is a land of golden plains where ancient olive trees draw bucolic shadows. By this time in my journey, I am always tempted to leave the motorway and go exploring the Alentejo through photography, a project that I hope to accomplish soon.
When I make this trip in spring the whiteness of the almond blossom leave me overwhelmed. In summer the mirages that form on the road along the asphalt announce the warm air I know is awaiting for me ahead. Finally, a colourful sign to mark the entry in the “ALGARVE” appears. More than five hours of travel and having crossed Portugal from north to south, I arrive to one of the parts of Portugal where I enjoyed some of my best summer holidays.

I have often been in the Vilamoura area, a true oasis thought for leisure, with dedicated bike lanes, palm trees along the roads, neighbourhoods of whitewashed houses surmounted by Moorish terraces which honor the legacy of all the arabic ancestors who lived here. Everything here exudes a sense of calm, sun, and … vacation.

Vilamoura has some the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Faithful to the beaches of Falésia and Rocha Baixinha (better known as Praia dos Tomates) I stare tirelessly with the warm tones of the cliffs plunging into the sand. I love taking long walks along the beach, always bewildered by the cliffs tones ranging from a sharp sandy white and a striking reddish orange.

Huge cactuses give me the sensation of being at some exotic destination in the Americas. The Grand Canyon could claim to be an ancestor of these Algarve’s red cliffs.
But the thing that strikes me most are that here the Atlantic waters are warm! In each of the 10 days I spent this summer in the Algarve I have always entered the water without any fear of a cold stream.

And the warm air.
A northern girl like me is used to some fog and humidity in the early morning. In the Algarve the air dawns warm, clear and transparent. The sun clings to the day from the morning to the time when the evening takes him definitely away, pulling it gently down the water line on the horizon, to the west.
