Ourense, in Galicia, is a city rich in history and heritage. Located in the Minho Valley, this spa town wich is part of The European Route of Historical Thermal Towns has at least 8 good reasons for a visit.
1. As termas ao ar livre em plena cidade ou junto ao rio | The outdoor hot springs in the city or by the river
Ourense Fontes Termais
The thermal springs of As Burgas, in Ourense, are linked to the origin of the city, dating back to the Roman era. The Romans will have christened it Aquis Aurienses (golden waters), a name that refers both to the abundance of gold in the Minho River and to the therapeutic value of the local hot springs.
Even today, the sources continue to produce hot springs at a temperature above 60ºC and with an impressive flow of 300 liters per minute. Ourense has 3 Burgas classified as an artistic historical group: Burga de Arriba, Burga do Meio and Burga de Abaixo. If you can only visit one, opt for Burga do Medio (in the opening photo of this article). It is next to the Burgas Interpretation Center, with a very complete exhibition on the Roman baths and an open-air museum with Roman bath wall structures and the first-century Revve Anabaraego shrine swimming pool, unique in the peninsula.
Here you can enjoy an incredible open-air thermal pool where and take a relaxing bath at 37ºC in the heart of the historic center. It operates from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm and from 5 pm to 9 pm and is free of charge.
Ourense is also part of the Miño Thermal Route, formed by 5 km of pedestrian zones with 7 thermal facilities in which you can relax while enjoying a bath in the middle of nature, be it winter or summer. Taking a thermal bath at night while gazing at the stars is what I will do on my next visit to Ourense.
2. A Catedral de Ourense | The Ourense Cathedral
Even on a rainy morning, strolling through the old streets of the historic center and seeing the great octagonal dome set high above the surrounding rooftops is impressive.
Ourense is not a big city, but the cathedral testifies to the importance of this Galician province capital already at the time it was built in the 12th and 13th centuries.
Dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours (read more about this historic figure here), the Cathedral of Ourense is the main monument of the city, predominantly Romanesque style, with Cistercian and Gothic influences. Its large cross vaults of warheads are testimony to almost a thousand years of history and invite to contemplation.
3. O centro histórico | The historical center
During the day, in addition to the cathedral, the historic center invites you to relax on one of the many esplanades on the old neighboorhoods or at the Plaza Mayor. Surrounded by old and noble houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, the main feature of this square is its slightly sloping floor conducting to the building of the Ayutamiento, seat of the town hall. This is a unique feature among all town hall squares in Europe.
4. A vida nocturna de Ourense | The Ourense nightlife
Nightlife in Ourense unfolds around the Plaza Mayor. The center is mostly pedestrian and you don’t have to get in the car to go from one place to another nor make a decision on where to go. Bars, terraces and nightclubs all converge in a maze of narrow streets and small squares. To get a better idea of how to explore the night from the evening till the daylight, see the tips of the newspaper Voz de Galicia here.
5. A gastronomia | The gastronomy
Almejas galegas by Vera Dantas
Gastronomy is the second reason chosen by tourists to visit Galicia.
Located in the Galician countryside, Ourense combines the taste for meat and fresh vegetables with the mastery of the octopus coastal cuisine or the lamprey of the River Minho.
Many of the recognised products of Galician gastronomy are grown here. One of the most famous dishes is the “cozido” ou “pote galego”. In the many taverns there are delicious empanadas, pinchos and tapas. In the streets around the cathedral, known as the “Viños” (wines) streets, there is even a Tapas and Pinchos Route. See more suggestions here
6. A Feira e o Polvo | The traditional market and the Octopus
Pulpo galicia by Vera Dantas

The best octopus of Galicia is what is done in the interior of the province of Ourense, far from the Atlantic coasts, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages (find our why here).
On the 7th and 17th of each month, there is a traditional market in Ourense and if you go to Campo de la Feria (next to the A Chavasqueira Hot Springs), you can taste the oldest and more genuine gastronomic traditions of the city. On the menu there is octopus and beef cooked in the boiler (carne no caldeiro), accompanied by an excellent Ribeiro wine. If, in the morning, you take a bath in the thermal pools next to the River Minho and the market, your lunch will surely taste as divine!
7. Os vinhos e sidras | The wines and siders
As for the wines, we are in a region of Vinhos Verdes and in Ourense you will find a great choice of these refreshing and fruity wines also traditional of the North of Portugal. Galiza is also famous for its siders, with completely different varieties in color, aroma and flavour. I gladly tasted the delicious Maeloc siders and my favourite was no doubt the one made of strawberry. They are only sold in Galiza, so you have to head to Ourense to taste them…
8. Xantar, o Salão Internacional de Turismo Gastronómico | The International Salon of Gastronomic Tourism
Ourense also has an event of exceptional quality to get to know and taste all the rich gastronomic and wine products of Galicia: Xantar, the International Gastronomic Tourism Fair, an event not to miss.
Every year, in February, the Expourense venue becomes a meeting place for destinations with the best flavours of Spain and beyond. In the 2017 edition, the invited region was the Porto and North of Portugal, with the aim of strengthening the cross-border relationship between Portugal and Galicia.

As degustações oferecidas pelos expositores;

Discovering new destinations and ideas to make the most of your vacation or weekend getaway.
Ourense is not only a city but also a provincial capital, and therefore it is a good starting point to discover luxuriant destinations in Galicia. Ribeira Sacra, besides being a wine region, has the largest concentration of churches and monasteries in Europe, and is a destiny I intend to explore this spring.
